Finance Minister Moosa Zameer has resigned from his post, the President's Office has confirmed.
Zameer has not publicly stated his reasons for leaving the position.
The resignation is understood to have been Zameer's own decision.
Zameer is one of the most senior figures in the current administration. When President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu first formed his cabinet in November 2023, Zameer was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs. He moved to the finance portfolio on September 30, 2024, as part of a broader cabinet reshuffle.
Zameer had previously denied social media campaigns suggesting he was seeking the People's National Congress (PNC) ticket to contest the 2028 presidential election.
His departure comes at a sensitive moment for the country's finances. When Zameer took over the finance ministry, the Maldives was experiencing a serious fiscal deterioration. During his tenure, the country saw signs of economic stabilization, including a one-notch improvement in the Fitch credit rating, which the government cited as a milestone.
