Velana International Airport (VIA) is set to provide a smooth and comfortable departure experience for Maldivian pilgrims travelling for the 1447 Hajj pilgrimage, with Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) introducing a range of special arrangements ahead of the journeys to Saudi Arabia.
The arrangements have been organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, Maldives Hajj Corporation and other relevant authorities, reflecting a collective effort to support pilgrims during one of the most important journeys of their lives.
This year, Maldivian pilgrims will travel on two Maldivian flights and two Saudia flights under the “Makkah Route Initiative,” with departures scheduled for May 15, 17, 18 and 19, 2026.
The first Saudia flight, departing on Friday, May 15, will carry 242 pilgrims. To ensure convenience, buses transporting pilgrims will arrive at the area in front of the former domestic terminal. Facilities have also been arranged for pilgrims to perform Friday prayers on the ground floor of the Waterfront building before departure.
For pilgrims departing on May 17, 18 and 19, buses will drop passengers at the Terminal 2 drop-off zone, while the Concourse area of Terminal 2 has been designated as the waiting area.
MACL said dedicated team members will be stationed across the airport during departure periods to guide and assist pilgrims, helping ensure a seamless and welcoming experience from arrival at the airport until boarding.
The preparations highlight VIA’s continued commitment to enhancing passenger experience and supporting national initiatives that hold deep importance for the Maldivian community.
