In a step toward greater inclusion in the maritime sector, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has welcomed Mariyam Hamdha Hassan, as its first female apprentice marine mechanic in the company’s Marine Engineering Department.
Hamdha’s appointment marks a milestone for MPL, reflecting a broader shift toward empowering women in traditionally male-dominated technical fields. As an apprentice, she has already demonstrated strong enthusiasm and commitment to learning the core principles of marine mechanics.
Her training includes hands-on exposure to essential processes such as oil purification systems, as well as the use of specialized marine engineering tools critical to vessel maintenance and performance.
MPL emphasized that Hamdha’s journey represents the company’s ongoing commitment to nurturing talent and promoting continuous learning across its workforce. By providing opportunities for skill development and professional growth, the organization aims to build a more diverse and capable maritime industry in the Maldives.
Hamdha’s achievement is expected to inspire more young women to explore careers in marine engineering and other technical disciplines, paving the way for a more inclusive future in the country’s maritime sector.
