The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company has introduced hotline number 1655 for its upcoming government-operated taxi service, as preparations continue for its official launch.
The service, which will operate 24 hours a day through a dedicated mobile application, is aimed at addressing persistent challenges in the country’s public transportation system. MTCC confirmed that the hotline will handle all inquiries related to the service.
The rollout has faced multiple delays despite earlier announcements indicating launches in July last year and later around Eid-al-Fitr. Authorities now aim to begin operations before the end of Ramadan.
MTCC is currently recruiting drivers, with a total requirement of 407, including 122 part-time positions. The fleet will consist of three vehicle models, with 60 cars arriving from Thailand in the first batch and additional units to be sourced from China.
The initiative follows growing public dissatisfaction with existing taxi services, where availability remains inconsistent despite around 1,500 registered taxis. The government’s entry into the sector is intended to improve reliability and accessibility for commuters.
