The People's Majlis has approved Hassan Zareer as the Minister of Finance and State-Owned Enterprises, PSM News reported.
The approval passed with the unanimous votes of 49 members present at the sitting.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu appointed Zareer to the post on 8 June. Under the law, after a member is appointed to the cabinet, the President must seek parliamentary approval for the appointment. A minister gains legal authority only once parliament grants approval.
Following the appointment, the matter was referred to the Committee on Government Oversight for review. The committee decided to recommend approval, with the consensus of members who attended the meeting. The recommendation was then put to the floor, where the full chamber endorsed it.
Zareer has previously served as Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner General of the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority. He holds a Bachelor of Accounting and a Master of Science in Finance from the International Islamic University Malaysia.
