Onions accounted for the highest volume of goods cleared at the Malé Commercial Harbor as Maldives Ports Limited reported a significant increase in food related imports during the early days of Ramadan. Statistics released by MPL show that a total of 1,057 tons of cargo across 44 consignments were cleared from the port yesterday, underscoring the seasonal surge in demand for essential food items.
According to the breakdown provided by the port operator, onions topped the list with 900 sacks cleared. Potatoes followed with 360 sacks, while tomatoes reached 252 sacks. The shipments also included 87 cases of eggs and 90 sacks of cabbage, alongside other produce such as watermelon, raw pineapple, bananas, pumpkin and passion fruit.
The figures reflect the heightened consumption patterns typically seen during Ramadan, when households, cafés and food businesses increase procurement of fresh ingredients for iftar and sahoor preparations. Imports of perishable items generally rise during this period to ensure uninterrupted supply across Malé and the atolls.
MPL stated that the Malé Commercial Harbor experiences a consistent spike in cargo volumes during the fasting month, particularly for fresh produce. To manage the increased workload, the company’s operations teams have been working to facilitate faster clearance and reduce turnaround time for businesses.
As part of its Ramadan preparedness measures, MPL has established a dedicated 3,000 square foot sheltered area designed specifically for perishable goods. The facility is intended to streamline handling processes while protecting the quality and freshness of imported produce before distribution.
The port operator noted that such initiatives are aimed at supporting market stability during Ramadan by ensuring essential food items reach retailers on time, helping maintain steady supply for consumers throughout the month.
