Velana International Airport (VIA) recorded more than 27,000 passengers in a single day yesterday, marking the second-busiest day for passenger traffic so far this year, according to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).
The surge in
activity saw the airport handling a total of 27,000-plus travelers across its
international and domestic terminals, reflecting sustained growth in air
traffic and travel demand. The International Terminal alone facilitated 22,142
passengers, including 11,035 departures from the Maldives and 11,107 arrivals
into the country.
Meanwhile, the
Domestic Terminal handled a total of 4,843 passengers, with 2,652 departing
from Malé to domestic destinations and 2,191 arriving in the capital. In
addition to passenger movements, air traffic activity remained high, with 239
aircraft movements recorded throughout the day.
Commenting on
the milestone, MACL Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Ibrahim
Shareef Mohamed said the day ranked among the busiest in the airport’s history.
He noted that extensive operational measures have been put in place to manage
the increased volume efficiently.
“We have robust
plans in place to minimize passenger waiting times in queues and to expedite
our services. Despite the significant increase in airport activity, we are
pleased that passengers are experiencing an enhanced journey through the new
terminal,” Ibrahim Shareef said.
The strong
passenger throughput highlights the growing role of Velana International
Airport as the country’s main aviation hub, driven by rising tourism demand and
expanded connectivity. MACL has continued to emphasize operational readiness
and service improvements as traffic volumes continue to climb.
