The government is currently discussing the removal of subsidies provided for sugar as part of broader efforts to promote healthier lifestyles, Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim said today.
Speaking at a press conference held by the Ministry of Health, Minister Nazim confirmed that discussions are underway regarding the elimination of subsidies on sugar, which is currently categorised as a basic food commodity. The proposal forms part of a wider set of policy considerations aimed at addressing lifestyle related health issues.
The minister said the government is examining regulatory approaches related to sugar consumption, noting that taxation on sugar sweetened products is being considered within specific policy frameworks that address public lifestyle choices.
Minister Nazim also highlighted other ongoing measures under consideration by the government to address health risks linked to lifestyle habits. These include the recently announced ban on vaping and restrictions on tobacco products for certain age groups. He added that authorities are also evaluating the possibility of banning shisha.
According to the minister, the potential removal of sugar subsidies and the introduction of taxes on sugar are among the policy options currently being discussed as part of these broader initiatives.
“We are conducting these discussions at various levels. The question likely remains as to when full implementation will occur. It is crucial that these actions are taken at the most opportune and significant moment,” Minister Nazim said.
The deliberations reflect the government’s ongoing focus on strengthening public health policies while assessing the timing and implementation of regulatory changes that may influence consumer behaviour and lifestyle related health outcomes.
