Maldives, Türkiye push to activate trade and agriculture pact

Maldives Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam met with Türkiye's Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumaklı on June 7 on the sidelines of the Zero Waste Forum in Türkiye. The two ministers discussed accelerating the implementation of agriculture and fisheries commitments under a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding and a Preferential Trade Agreement.

Maldives Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam met with Türkiye's Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Ibrahim Yumaklı on the sidelines of the Zero Waste Forum in Türkiye on June 7, pressing both countries to move beyond signed agreements and deliver concrete results in agriculture and fisheries.

The courtesy call, held during Minister Shiyam's official visit to Türkiye from June 5 to 7, focused on accelerating the implementation of commitments under a Memorandum of Understanding and a Preferential Trade Agreement signed between the two countries. The PTA provides for duty exemptions on select categories of goods traded between the Maldives and Türkiye.

Both ministers agreed that the agreements must translate into practical, results-driven cooperation rather than remain on paper. Minister Shiyam also conveyed appreciation to the Turkish government for its continued support and assistance to the Maldives.

The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to deepen ties in agriculture and fisheries, with shared goals around sustainable development and food security.

The Zero Waste Forum, hosted in Türkiye, brought together international delegates focused on environmental and resource management issues.
