Maldivian, the
national airline of the Maldives, has announced a reduction in domestic
airfares for Free Independent Travelers (FITs), cutting average ticket prices
by 15% in line with a presidential pledge to boost local tourism.
The airline said
the initiative aims to make domestic travel more affordable for independent
tourists while stimulating demand in the guesthouse and island tourism sectors.
By lowering fares, Maldivian hopes to channel greater economic benefits to
local communities and expand the reach of the country’s tourism beyond resorts.
“This initiative
underscores our commitment to supporting local tourism while delivering greater
value for our passengers,” said Maldivian’s Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas. “As
the gateway to the Maldives’ islands, Maldivian takes pride in connecting travellers
to the heart of our local communities. By introducing more affordable fares and
expanding accessibility, we are helping to spread the benefits of tourism more
widely across the country.”
In addition to
the FIT fare reduction, the airline also provides special corporate rates for
local tourism establishments, including resorts and guesthouses. The airline
said these rates are part of its broader strategy to strengthen partnerships
within the sector and support businesses that play a role in developing
community-based tourism.
With the largest
domestic network in the Maldives, Maldivian currently connects 17 destinations
across the archipelago, from the northernmost to the southernmost atolls. The
network provides access to some of the nation’s most scenic and culturally rich
islands, offering opportunities for travellers to explore beyond the capital
and resort islands.
Tickets for FITs
can be booked through Maldivian’s official website, mobile application,
Passenger Sales Agents (PSAs), select Online Travel Agencies (OTAs), or by
emailing the airline’s customer service.
