Velana International Airport (VIA) officially commenced operations at its new passenger terminal today, welcoming its first aircraft in a landmark moment for the nation’s aviation sector. The inaugural flight, operated by the national airline Maldivian, arrived from Cochin International Airport and was greeted with a traditional water salute upon landing.
The Airbus A330,
carrying 112 passengers, was the first to disembark at the state-of-the-art
terminal, signaling the beginning of phased operations at the long-anticipated
facility. The flight—designated 707 2Q—marked a symbolic start to a new era in
international connectivity and passenger experience for the Maldives.
A special
welcoming ceremony was held to commemorate the occasion, attended by key
government and aviation officials. Passengers were greeted with traditional
Maldivian drum performances and a warm reception led by Finance Minister Musa
Zameer, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen, and Minister of
Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim. Also present were Maldives Airports
Company Limited (MACL) Chairperson Aishath Noorain Janah, CEO and Managing
Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Deputy Managing Directors Mohamed Lamrann and
Mujthaba Latheef, along with senior representatives from Island Aviation
Services Limited, including Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas and Deputy Managing
Director Ali Saleem.
As part of the
event, MACL presented a special plaque to Island Aviation Services Limited in
appreciation of the airline’s historic landing. The plaque was handed over by
Finance Minister Zameer on behalf of MACL.
The transition
to the new terminal will continue in phases, with one airline moving at a time
in line with both local and international aviation standards. MACL has
announced that all carriers will be operating from the new facility ahead of
the peak tourist season later this year.
The opening of
the new terminal marks a major milestone in the Maldives’ efforts to enhance
airport capacity, modernize passenger services, and support the country’s
growing status as a premier global travel destination.
