Bank of Maldives (BML) has launched ENV POS, a new initiative that will channel a portion of its earnings from POS (Point of Sale) transactions into environmental protection efforts across the country.
Set to begin on 1 July 2025, the program is a first in the Maldivian banking sector. Under this initiative, BML will contribute from its own earnings for every card transaction made using cards on ENV POS terminals—at no cost to the customer or merchant.
“Based on current usage, we expect to contribute MVR 5.5 million annually, and this amount will grow with more transactions,” said BML CEO and Managing Director Mohamed Shareef. “This isn’t a one-off campaign, but a long-term commitment. Whether you’re buying groceries or paying for lunch, choosing to pay with BML can help make a real, measurable difference.”
The funds generated through ENV POS will be used in partnership with NGOs and other collaborators to support key sustainability projects, including recycling programs, reforestation efforts, and waste management initiatives.
Positioned as a national initiative to protect the Maldives’ islands and oceans, ENV POS aims to give everyday financial transactions an added impact—empowering individuals to support environmental causes without any extra cost.
As the country’s leading financial institution, BML has reaffirmed its commitment to community development, sustainable growth, and supporting environmental initiatives through this new step. The bank operates a nationwide network of branches, ATMs, and digital banking services, serving as a key driver in the Maldives' financial ecosystem.
