The government has today awarded two major infrastructure projects for the development of a dinghy jetty and coastal protection in K. Villingili to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
The agreements were signed at a ceremony held at Dharubaaruge. MTCC was represented by its Managing Director, Retired Deputy Commissioner of Police Ahmed Saudhee, while State Minister Ismail Hamid signed on behalf of the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure.
K. Villingili, which has a population of 6,755, is among the most densely populated islands in the Maldives. The coastal protection project is expected to provide a significant solution to erosion affecting the island's shoreline while creating a safer and more protected beach area for residents.
The development of the dinghy jetty is also expected to improve accessibility to the island and address difficulties faced by people travelling to Villingili for various purposes.
Under the K. Villingili Dinghy Jetty Development Project, MTCC will dredge 3,698 cubic metres of the harbour basin, construct three metres of revetment, 74 metres of quay wall and 24 metres of breakwater, as well as develop a 74-metre-long bridge.
The project, valued at MVR 14.91 million, is scheduled to be completed within 150 days.
Meanwhile, the K. Villingili Coastal Protection Project includes the reclamation of 1.09 hectares of land, construction of 150 metres of revetment and installation of 181 metres of breakwater.
The coastal protection project is valued at MVR 45.66 million and is expected to be completed within 180 days.
Together, the two projects have a combined value of approximately MVR 60.57 million.
Established in 1980, MTCC has played a major role in the development of infrastructure and essential facilities across the Maldives. Over the past 45 years, the company has undertaken and completed numerous infrastructure projects throughout the country.
