In a move to promote healthier
lifestyles and sustainable transportation in island communities, Bank of
Maldives (BML) has donated 300 bicycles to teenagers aged 14 to 17 across six
islands in the Maldives. This initiative, coordinated in collaboration with
local NGOs, aims to foster fitness and environmental consciousness by offering
eco-friendly transportation to young residents.
The bicycles, distributed through
partnerships with dedicated community organizations, will benefit youths from
the islands of HA. Dhidhoo, B. Eydhafushi, K. Maafushi, N. Manadhoo, M. Mulah,
and Vilimale’. These NGOs, including Dhidhoo Kurimagu, West Wings, New Star
Sports Club, Chester, Community Empowerment Linkage, and Save the Beach, each
played a key role in identifying recipients and distributing bicycles within
their respective communities.
Cycling as a means of local
transport aligns with the Maldives’ broader sustainability goals, particularly
as the island nation seeks to reduce its carbon footprint and lessen reliance
on motorized vehicles. In recent years, there has been a push within communities
to promote low-impact travel options, and this initiative by BML serves to
further reinforce these efforts. Cycling is not only a zero-emission
alternative to other modes of transport but also a way to support physical
well-being among young people.
This latest donation from Bank of
Maldives reflects the bank’s dedication to community development projects that
address social, health, and environmental needs across the Maldives. BML has
previously initiated and supported numerous community programs, and this
bicycle donation is seen as another step in the bank’s commitment to uplifting
communities and inspiring sustainable practices among Maldivians.
