Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has begun preparations to launch an international-standard duty-free operation at the new terminal of Gan International Airport, marking a significant step in enhancing passenger experience in the southern Maldives.

The initiative aims to bring globally recognised retail standards to Gan, positioning the airport as a key international gateway for the southern region. It forms part of broader national efforts to strengthen regional connectivity, boost economic activity, and support tourism growth beyond the Greater Malé area.

According to MACL, the duty-free development is expected to contribute to increased tourist arrivals and facilitate the expansion of international flight routes to Addu City. The project is also anticipated to generate substantial employment opportunities, particularly for Maldivian youth.

As part of the rollout, selected staff will undergo specialised training with internationally recognised brands to ensure service delivery meets global travel retail benchmarks.

The move aligns with wider government objectives to establish Addu City as an emerging hub in the international travel network, while advancing the Maldives’ aviation and tourism sectors through sustainable, future-focused development.
