Land reclamation works for the development of Sh. Milandhoo Airport have been successfully completed, marking a major milestone in the project’s progress.
The reclamation covered a total area of 21 hectares, with an estimated fill volume of 1,134,534 cubic metres. The works were carried out by the dredger Queen of the Netherlands, which has a dredging capacity of 35,000 cubic metres.
Operations commenced on April 3, 2026, and were completed on May 4, 2026, with the project finalized within 31 days as scheduled.
According to project details, the total airport development area spans 25.90 hectares, including 4.9 hectares allocated for tree removal on the existing island. The reclamation component of the project achieved 100 percent completion as planned.
The project was undertaken by Peninsula Infrastructure Pvt Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).
Peninsula Infrastructure was established on October 6, 2025, with the objective of expanding beyond airport operations into large-scale land reclamation, dredging and urban infrastructure development across the Maldives.
The completion of the reclamation phase is expected to pave the way for the next stages of airport development at Milandhoo, aimed at improving connectivity and supporting economic growth in Shaviyani Atoll.
