Maldives Wins World Leading Green Destination Award for the First Time

The Maldives has been awarded the title of World’s Leading Green Destination at the 2024 World Travel Awards (WTA) Grand Final Gala Ceremony, held on November 24 in Madeira, Portugal. This marks a historic achievement for the island nation, as it secures the top spot in sustainable tourism for the first time, competing against renowned destinations such as Chile, Madagascar, Norway, and Peru.

The recognition is a testament to the Maldives' unwavering commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable tourism practices. Ibrahim Shiuree, CEO and Managing Director of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) expressed pride in the accomplishment. This award highlights our dedication to environmental stewardship and the preservation of our pristine natural environment for future generations, Shiuree said.

Sustainability is a cornerstone of the Maldives' tourism industry, with the nation’s natural beauty serving as a backdrop to its eco-conscious travel initiatives. The country’s approach to balancing luxury with environmental care has made it a sought-after destination for travelers who prioritize sustainability. The Maldives continues to set a global benchmark for responsible tourism, offering visitors not only a tropical paradise but also an opportunity to contribute to the preservation of one of the world’s most delicate ecosystems.

In addition to the green accolade, the Maldives continued its dominance at the 2024 WTA ceremony by winning the World’s Leading Destination award for the fifth consecutive year. The Maldives also made history in the Indian Ocean category, securing titles for Leading Destination, Leading Green Destination, Leading Honeymoon Destination, and Leading Dive Destination for 2024. These achievements highlight the collective efforts of the country’s tourism industry, which has worked tirelessly to offer exceptional experiences while promoting sustainable tourism initiatives.

World Travel Awards is recognized globally as the most prestigious honor in the travel and tourism industry, with winners selected through a rigorous voting process by qualified travel professionals and consumers.
