Malé Commercial Harbour to Relocate to Thilafushi by 2027, Says President

Malé’s commercial harbour will be relocated to Thilafushi on November 11, 2027, President Mohamed Muizzu has announced.

Speaking in his presidential address today, the President said that once harbour services begin in Thilafushi, cargo operations will become significantly more efficient. Vessels that previously took up to seven days to unload will be able to complete operations within 48 hours.

He noted that extended cargo storage time at the port and improved handling facilities will reduce transportation costs, which is expected to lead to lower prices of goods and direct benefits for the public.

The President also said that goods currently stored in various locations across Malé will be transferred to Thilafushi. In addition, wholesale businesses operating in the Malé market area will be relocated to the new port zone.

With the upgraded facilities, cargo vessels will be able to dock more easily, reducing turnaround time and accelerating the distribution of goods to islands across the country.

He further highlighted that the longstanding difficulties faced by businesses and the public due to scattered storage facilities in Malé will be resolved. The current busiest market and port area, operated by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), is expected to be transformed into a more pedestrian-friendly space, improving convenience for residents.

Meanwhile, progress continues on the first phase of the port relocation project. Under this phase, the 125-metre international quay wall will be handed over today by MPL.

Authorities have also confirmed that the construction of a two-kilometre quay wall, paving works, buildings, and the procurement of equipment for the domestic port will be handed over to several parties by the middle of this year.

The relocation of Malé’s commercial harbour to Thilafushi is considered a key national infrastructure project aimed at modernising port services, strengthening supply chains, and supporting long-term economic development.
