Bank of Maldives (BML) will increase dollar usage limits on its credit cards starting February 1, 2026, as part of the government’s broader efforts to ease foreign currency restrictions. The announcement was made today by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in a post shared on social media platform X.
According to the
President, the dollar usage limit on BML Classic credit cards will be raised
from USD 750 to USD 1,400. Limits on Gold cards will be increased from USD 750
to USD 1,500, while Platinum cardholders will see their limits rise from USD
1,500 to USD 2,000.
In addition to
these changes, BML will revise its debit card allowances from November 11 this
year. The foreign Point-of-Sale (POS) transaction limit on debit cards will be
doubled from USD 500 to USD 1,000. Debit cardholders will also be allowed to
use up to USD 3,000 for airline ticket purchases and hotel bookings abroad.
Furthermore, on request, BML will facilitate debit card payments to hospitals
for medical expenses overseas.
This move
follows the bank’s earlier revision in July, when foreign transaction limits on
debit cards were increased from USD 250 to USD 500. The adjustments, the
President noted, are aimed at easing restrictions on international transactions
and addressing longstanding concerns from the public over limited access to
foreign exchange.
The policy shift
is expected to provide greater flexibility for Maldivians traveling abroad and
those requiring overseas medical, education, and hospitality services, while
also aligning with the government’s pledge to enhance financial accessibility.
