Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has denied rumours
circulating on social media claiming that terminals at Velana International
Airport (VIA) are to be handed over to foreign entities.
MACL, the operator of VIA, issued the statement in response
to claims suggesting the VIP terminal would be leased to a foreign company
under a long-term agreement.
Speaking to local media, a senior MACL official refuted the
claims that the VIP terminal will be handed over to a Dubai-based company,
stating that the government has not made any decision to transfer the operation
of any VIA terminal to a foreign party.
The official noted that MACL frequently receives project
proposals from various international companies, including a recent submission
from a Dubai-based firm. However, no decision has been made regarding that
proposal, and any future decisions will be made in the best interest of the
company and the country, the official assured.
Rumours have also surfaced suggesting the government plans
to hand over the operation of Hanimaadhoo International Airport to foreign
parties. Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, confirmed
that no such decision has been taken.
