Managing Director of Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) Hussain Fahmy has denied allegations circulating on social media that the state-owned company purchased an old vessel for MVR 17 million and later spent an additional MVR 1.8 million on its refurbishment.
The allegations were made by an anonymous account on X, which claimed that the vessel currently has a value of approximately MVR 900,000. The account also alleged that a member of MWSC's Board of Directors resigned in protest over the transaction.
Fahmy rejected the claims, describing them as “completely false and misleading.”
“No such purchase has been made by MWSC since 2023. No Board approval has been obtained to my knowledge and no such transaction has been discussed with any party,” Fahmy said.
He also denied that the resignation of a board director was connected to the alleged vessel transaction.
“The resignation of a Board Director in relation to this alleged transaction is also incorrect. His resignation was due to personal reasons,” he said.
Fahmy said serious allegations should not be presented as fact without credible evidence.
“These are serious allegations and should not be presented as facts without credible evidence. MWSC remains committed to transparency, accountability and due process,” he said.
