In a significant step toward the
grand opening of the New Passenger Terminal at Velana International Airport
(VIA), Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has successfully completed a
comprehensive round of technical trials for all core passenger check-in and
boarding systems.
This achievement marks a major
milestone in the Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) process, as
the new terminal nears full operational status ahead of its official
inauguration. The rigorous testing campaign focused on validating the functionality
and integration of essential systems that support the seamless movement of
passengers from check-in to departure.
According to MACL, the trial
phase encompassed several critical systems including the Passenger Check-in
System, Departure Control System (DCS), Baggage Reconciliation System (BRS),
Boarding Process Management, and Queue Management System. All systems were
stress-tested under simulated passenger flows to ensure reliability and
responsiveness.
The technical trials were
conducted in close collaboration with Maldivian, the national airline, ensuring
that the systems are fully compatible with the airline’s operations. This
strategic partnership allowed for synchronized testing of system integrations
and real-time coordination, key factors in achieving a smooth operational
transition.
“The successful completion of
these technical trials not only validates the new terminal’s operational
readiness, but also reaffirms MACL’s commitment to delivering a world-class
passenger experience,” said a senior MACL official.
With all systems now cleared, the
new terminal is poised to offer a state-of-the-art travel experience in line
with international aviation standards. The facility includes cutting-edge
technological infrastructure designed to minimize wait times, streamline
baggage handling, and enhance overall passenger convenience.
The opening of the terminal is
set to coincide with the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence, adding
symbolic significance to what is already the most ambitious aviation
infrastructure project in the nation’s history. As the largest-ever investment
in the country’s airport facilities, the new terminal is expected to redefine
the Maldives' gateway to the world.
