President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has inspected the progress of the Giraavaru Falhu land reclamation project, a key national initiative aimed at addressing housing challenges in the Greater Malé region.
The President was received at the site by cabinet ministers, senior officials from the President’s Office, and the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Maldives Airports Company Limited, Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, along with members of the company’s senior management.
During the visit, the President was briefed on the latest developments of the project and observed ongoing reclamation works, including dredging and sand-filling operations currently underway.
Land reclamation at Giraavaru Falhu resumed on 30 January 2026. The project, assigned to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), targets the reclamation of 97.15 hectares of land, of which 35 hectares have been completed so far.
Officials said the work is being carried out using trailing suction hopper dredgers, including the vessels Oranje and Queen of Nederlanden, to support efficient progress.
The project is being executed through Peninsula Infrastructure, a subsidiary of MACL registered in October 2025 as part of the company’s expansion into large-scale land reclamation and dredging. The move enables MACL to directly manage major infrastructure projects, often utilising leased high-capacity international vessels.
The Giraavaru Falhu project forms part of broader government efforts to increase land availability and support long-term urban development in the Greater Malé region.
