MACL Commences 27-Hectare Land Reclamation Project in Th. Veymandoo

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has commenced land reclamation works in Thaa Atoll Veymandoo, covering a total area of 27 hectares, with operations officially starting on 12 March 2026.

According to MACL, the project is being carried out by FILIPPO BRUNELLESCHI, a trailing suction hopper dredger with a capacity of 11,300 cubic metres. The vessel is currently engaged in dredging and reclamation activities to expand the island’s land area.

The commencement of reclamation marks a key step in ongoing development efforts in Veymandoo. The use of a high-capacity trailing suction hopper dredger enables large volumes of sand to be dredged and transported efficiently, allowing reclamation works to progress at scale.

MACL stated that the works involve reclaiming 27 hectares of land as part of the project scope. The deployment of FILIPPO BRUNELLESCHI reflects the scale of the operation, with the dredger designed to undertake large marine construction projects through continuous suction dredging and discharge.

The reclamation began on 12 March 2026, with the dredger mobilised to carry out the works in the designated project area around Th. Veymandoo.

Land reclamation projects remain a central component of infrastructure development across the Maldives, enabling island expansion and creating space for future economic and community development initiatives. The Veymandoo reclamation project forms part of these broader efforts to increase usable land in the atolls.
