Velana Airport to Debut Maldives' First 3D Baggage Screening System at New Terminal

Velana International Airport is set to unveil the Maldives’ first-ever 3D baggage screening technology as part of its new passenger terminal, scheduled to open on July 26. According to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), the cutting-edge Baggage Handling System (BHS) will significantly enhance security and streamline passenger experience, marking a major leap in the nation's aviation capabilities.

The advanced system, capable of processing up to 1,200 bags per hour, uses Computed Tomography X-ray (CTX) technology, similar to systems deployed in premier international hubs like Changi Airport and Kuala Lumpur International Airport. It automates 80-90% of screening functions, reducing reliance on manual checks while improving threat detection.

MACL says the system addresses one of the most persistent pain points at the current terminal: long queues and delays caused by pre-check-in baggage screening. With the new terminal, passengers can proceed directly to one of 47 check-in counters or multiple self-service kiosks, eliminating the need for preliminary baggage scans outside the terminal.

The BHS introduces a three-tier security architecture:

• Level 1: Fully automated 3D screening using four EDS machines.
• Level 2: Human verification by AVSEC and Customs officers across 40 screening stations.
• Level 3: Manual inspection at six stations using dual-view scanners, with secure bag opening protocols when required.

The improvements also extend to arrivals, with six baggage carousels, up from four, supported by faster retrieval systems to reduce delays, especially during peak hours.

Part of a $600 million terminal development project funded by the Saudi Fund and constructed by Saudi Binladin Group, the new facility is designed to handle 7.5 million passengers annually. The launch coincides with the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence, symbolizing a broader national push toward global infrastructure standards.

Industry analysts say the introduction of 3D baggage screening places the Maldives among a select group of countries with advanced airport security systems. The move is expected to boost the country’s aviation reputation and improve passenger satisfaction in a sector heavily reliant on tourism.

Phased operations will begin with the national airline’s inaugural landing on July 26, followed by narrow-body aircraft usage in August and wide-body transitions in September.
