President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced that the Cabinet has approved the bulk import of essential food items through the State Trading Organisation (STO), a measure intended to strengthen food security and stabilize supplies in the Maldives.
In a post on his official X account today, the President said the decision covers 10 types of fruits, 10 types of vegetables and other essential items for sale in the domestic market. In addition to staples such as sugar, rice and flour, the list will include products like lentils, eggs and potatoes.
According to the administration, the move aligns with the policy commitments set out in the President’s manifesto to ensure reliable access to everyday food items across the country.
The bulk import of essential items has long been a strategy used by successive governments to safeguard the public against supply chain disruptions and global price fluctuations. With this move, the current administration aims to maintain stability in the local market while ensuring that basic food items remain accessible to households across the country.
