The Maldivian Rufiyaa symbol has been included in Version 18.0 of the Unicode Standard, the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) announced in a press release.
Unicode Version 18.0 was released by the Unicode Consortium on September 16, 2026, with the Rufiyaa symbol assigned the code point U+20C2.
The symbol was introduced by the MMA in 2022. Its inclusion in the Unicode Standard will allow it to be used consistently across websites, mobile applications and other digital platforms.
The MMA described the development as a significant milestone in making the national currency symbol more accessible across digital mediums. It also thanked all parties that collaborated with the Authority to secure the symbol’s inclusion in the international standard.
The Rufiyaa symbol is expected to become available for wider use as operating systems, applications, fonts and other digital platforms adopt Unicode 18.0 through future updates.
