The land reclamation project at Rasmale’ has passed a major milestone, with more than half of the planned works at Site A now complete, according to the latest project update.
Current progress
shows that 71 hectares have been reclaimed out of the 137.5 hectares planned
for Site A, bringing overall completion to 51.64 percent. The achievement comes
just weeks after reclamation officially began, highlighting the pace of work at
one of the Maldives’ largest ongoing land development projects.
The reclamation
is being carried out using Cristóbal Colón, one of the world’s two largest
trailing suction hopper dredgers, boasting a capacity of 46,000 cubic metres.
The vessel is operated by Jan De Nul, a globally renowned dredging and marine
engineering firm with extensive experience in large-scale reclamation projects.
Maldives
Airports Company Limited (MACL) officially commenced reclamation works at
Rasmale’ Site A on 1 December 2025, as part of broader efforts to expand land
availability and support future infrastructure and development needs in the
Greater Malé region.
Officials have
previously described the Rasmale’ project as a strategically significant
development, expected to play a key role in easing land constraints and
enabling long-term urban and economic planning. With reclamation now past the
halfway point, attention is turning to maintaining momentum and ensuring the
project stays on schedule in the months ahead.
