The Integrated Public Ferry Network has officially begun operations in Thaa Atoll with the launch of the RTL high-speed ferry service, inaugurated by President Mohamed Muizzu during a ceremony held in Veymandoo last night.
With this
expansion, Thaa becomes the 12th atoll to be connected through the RTL network,
a nationwide transport system developed to improve inter-island connectivity.
According to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), two modern
high-speed ferries will provide services in Thaa Atoll, categorized under Zone
4. The ferries will operate across five routes, six days a week.
MTCC said that
ferry schedules will be accessible through the RTL mobile application and
website. As part of the introduction, familiarization trips will be conducted
from this Saturday until the 2nd of next month. Regular fares will apply once
the familiarization period concludes.
The RTL project
has been gradually rolled out across the Maldives, though services are yet to
be launched in eight atolls. MTCC confirmed that preparations are underway to
extend the service to these remaining regions in consultation with the Ministry
of Transport.
Currently, RTL
operations cover Ha. and Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Shaviyani Atoll, Noonu, Raa, Baa,
Lhaviyani, Gaafu Alifu, Gaafu Dhaalu, Fuvahmulah, Addu, and Thaa Atoll.
The government
has described the RTL network as a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing
mobility, reducing travel costs, and strengthening economic and social ties
between islands.
