The government has assured that staple food items sold through the State Trading Organization (STO) will remain available at affordable prices across the Maldives during the holy month of Ramadan, according to the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade.
In an article published on its website, the ministry said preparations were carried out ahead of Ramadan, with stringent measures introduced to ensure a stable supply of essential food items during a period when demand typically increases significantly.
According to the government, prices of key goods in the market have remained stable despite the seasonal surge in demand. A total of 26 products — including widely consumed items such as sugar and flour — have been included in the list of essential food commodities that are being closely monitored.
The ministry said it is actively monitoring market prices and working closely with relevant state institutions to ensure the uninterrupted supply of goods throughout the month.
Officials noted that these measures are aimed at strengthening national food security and ensuring that basic commodities remain accessible to households across the country during Ramadan.
The initiative also seeks to ease the financial burden on families during the holy month, when spending on food typically rises as communities gather for Iftar meals and social gatherings.
