The Ministry of Transport has announced restricted hours for the movement of goods transport and heavy vehicles in the Greater Malé Area during the upcoming month of Ramadan and the first seven days of Shawwal, in a bid to ease congestion and ensure smoother traffic flow during one of the busiest periods of the year.
According to the Ministry, the restrictions will apply in phases. From the 1st to the 19th of Ramadan and during the first seven days of Shawwal, heavy vehicles transporting commercial goods will not be allowed on the roads between 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., and again from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. From the 20th of Ramadan until the end of the month, the prohibition will apply only from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
During these specified hours, the transportation of goods in bulk and the operation of heavy vehicles will be strictly prohibited. Authorities have warned that violations will result in a fine of MVR 750, in accordance with the Land Transport Act.
The Ministry stated that the measure is introduced annually to manage the surge in traffic that typically accompanies Ramadan. As the holy month approaches, commercial activity across Malé intensifies, with businesses increasing the loading and distribution of goods to islands and local markets. Activity at the Malé harbor also rises significantly as supplies are prepared and dispatched nationwide.
Officials emphasized that the primary objective of setting these restricted hours is to enhance road safety, reduce peak-hour congestion, and ensure smoother mobility for the public during fasting hours and evening rush periods.
With Ramadan traditionally bringing higher demand for essential goods and increased movement across the capital, authorities are urging businesses and transport operators to comply fully with the announced schedule to support safer and more efficient traffic management across the Greater Malé Area.
