The Ministry of Finance and Planning has confirmed the appointment of former minister Hamdhoon Hameed as an advisor to the Minister, with the role carrying ministerial-level designation. While the exact date of his appointment has not been disclosed, the Ministry noted that his experience in planning and governance would support the Ministry’s expanded mandate.
Hamdhoon
previously served as Minister of Planning and National Development from 2003 to
2008 under former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, where he oversaw nationwide
development and planning initiatives. More recently, he held the role of
Non-Resident Ambassador to Singapore between 2016 and 2018, further
strengthening his diplomatic and policy background.
The appointment
follows government restructuring announced in December last year, when the
Ministry of Finance was renamed the Ministry of Finance and Planning. The
restructuring transferred planning responsibilities—previously handled by the
Ministry of Housing, Construction, and Urban Development—to the Finance
portfolio.
By bringing in a
seasoned figure with both domestic and international experience, the Ministry
aims to bolster its capacity in steering the country’s financial and planning
priorities under the unified framework.
