Maldives
Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has officially launched the land
reclamation project in Gulhi Island, Kaafu Atoll, with physical work beginning
following an inauguration ceremony held yesterday. The event was officiated by
MTCC’s Managing Director, Ahmed Saudhee.
The project,
which carries a total cost of MVR 89 million, involves the reclamation of 10.15
hectares of land. Alongside this major expansion effort, the initiative will
also see significant coastal fortification measures. These include the
construction of nearly 11,000 meters of boulder revetment, over 360 meters of
geobag revetment, and 88 meters of groynes to protect the reclaimed land from
erosion and environmental impact.
Gulhi, a small
island with a population of just over 800 residents, has steadily emerged as a
hub for local tourism, currently boasting 15 guesthouses. The island faces
challenges related to limited land availability, and the new project is
expected to provide much-needed space for housing as well as stimulate further
economic and business development in the community.
With the
reclamation effort now underway, residents and stakeholders are hopeful the
expansion will not only ease residential constraints but also enhance the
island’s potential as a local tourism destination and improve overall
infrastructure resilience.
