Airports Company Limited (MACL) has successfully completed the country’s
first-ever aerobridge-to-aircraft connection trials, marking a historic
milestone in the development of Velana International Airport’s New Passenger
Terminal. The trials, conducted as part of the airport’s Operational Readiness
and Airport Transfer (ORAT) programme, confirm the terminal’s readiness for its
scheduled opening on July 26, 2025.
The pioneering
trials were inaugurated by MACL’s CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef
Mohammed, with Deputy Managing Directors Mohammed Lam’aan and Mujtaba Lateef
overseeing the operations. Utilizing Maldivian Airlines’ Airbus A330 and A320
aircraft, the trials tested two of the terminal’s 12 aerobridges, as well as
the state-of-the-art Advanced Visual Docking Guidance System (AVDGS) – a system
comparable to those used in global aviation hubs such as Dubai and Singapore.
This major
advancement is expected to revolutionize the passenger experience at Velana
International Airport. Currently, passengers disembark via stairs and walk to
the terminal – a process that can take up to 35 minutes and exposes travelers
to weather-related discomfort and safety risks. With the new aerobridge system
in place, the disembarkation process will be reduced to just eight minutes,
offering a sheltered, secure, and seamless transition from aircraft to
terminal.
“The successful
implementation of this system is a game-changer for Maldivian aviation,” said
CEO Ibrahim Shareef Mohammed. “This brings our infrastructure in line with
international standards and reflects our commitment to world-class service.”
The aerobridges
are just one part of a broader modernization effort. The trials also included
the integration of the Advanced Visual Docking Guidance System, a high-tech
electronic display that provides real-time guidance to pilots during aircraft
parking. This system enhances safety, reduces dependency on ground marshallers,
and ensures precise alignment of aircraft with the terminal gates – even in
challenging weather conditions.
By incorporating
this advanced docking system, MACL has taken a decisive step toward boosting
operational efficiency. The technology supports faster aircraft turnaround
times, expands passenger capacity, and ensures compliance with the safety
protocols of globally recognized airports.
The successful
completion of these technical trials underscores MACL’s readiness to transition
to full operational mode at the new terminal later this month. It also affirms
the company’s long-term vision to position Velana International Airport as a
regional aviation hub equipped with cutting-edge technology and infrastructure
that prioritizes passenger comfort and safety.
With this
achievement, the Maldives moves closer to establishing itself as a leader in
aviation excellence in the Indian Ocean region.
